The November 2013 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 90) is on sale now, and as usual is packed with a wide variety of fascinating features. Our cover car this month is a first for Irish Vintage Scene in that it’s a diesel. However this is no worn-out workhorse, but an elegant and luxurious saloon every bit as desirable as its petrol rivals of the late fifties. This 1959 Mercedes 180D was first registered in Gibraltar, but by the time its current owner came across it in the UK a couple of years ago it was looking extremely sorry for itself. It was shipped back to Ireland and a full restoration was embarked upon, which you can read all about in our lead feature. Moving further into the magazine we also take a look at one of the most faithful and fondly-remembered cars in Irish folklore, an E494A Ford Anglia from 1952, plus an attractive and desirable Triumph TR6 sports car….
Our feature tractors this month are very special, kicking off with a 1946 Silver King Model 42; if you’ve never heard of the Silver King tractor marque, prepare to have a new favourite as they were some of the most expensive but beautifully-crafted machines of the forties. A dependable little Farmall Cub is also featured, which has been part of the same Co. Roscommon family ever since it was bought new in Sligo in 1952. It’s recently been restored to beautiful condition, and is destined to remain a treasured family heirloom.
Motorcycle enthusiasts will be interested to read about a Honda CD175, a bike that would have given many Irish riders their first taste of motorcycling in the sixties and seventies, while our commercial feature this month looks at a very unusual DKW F800 Shnellaster van, which is thought to be the only one of its kind in Ireland or the UK, and possible one of only fifty survivors worldwide.
With a long list of event reports, ranging from the Mountbellew Vintage Show to the Trim Vintage & Veteran Car Show, plus all our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters, News & Events and lots, lots more, you won’t want to miss the November 2013 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!
The Features
Economy DriveDiesel frugality isn’t something you associate with elegant classic cars, but an enduring exception to this rule is Mercedes-Benz. The Stuttgart manufacturer has long been recognised as an expert in automotive diesel engine manufacture, and this 1959 180D shows us why following a recent restoration by its owner. | |
Long Live the King Silver King certainly isn’t the first name that springs to mind when you think of tractors, as these are extremely rare. Used everywhere from California vegetable fields to Hollywood movie sets, the Silver King tractor was a truly amazing machine in all its forms and, thanks to Liam Gray, one has now made it to our shores. |

Up the Blues! The Honda 50 is such an iconic motorcycle in Ireland that it often puts its slightly larger stablemates in the shade. This month we look at once of these, a CD175, which has recently been restored to beautiful condition. What’s more, it has a lovely family history behind it, as Carl Czanik reports. |

Hide & Deek The DKW F800 ‘Schnellaster’ might be a strange sight to most of our readers, but in fact there were a good few of these little two-stroke commercials running around Ireland in the fifties and sixties. Nowadays they are rare in the extreme, but DKW aficionado Bill Ryan’s childhood memories of his father’s example has seen him track one down for himself. |

Tracks & ShovelsBrian Butler from Kilkenny has only been collecting models for ten years, which is a short time in terms of this hobby. However, in that time he has amassed a very interesting collection, as well as becoming the organiser of the Kilkenny Diecast Model Toy Show. |
