Issue 92 January 2014

Cover-small3

The January 2014 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 92) is on sale now, and as usual is packed with a wide variety of fascinating features. On the cover this month is one of the cutest and most endearing classic cars you’ll ever see; the Fiat 600 was a popular little car in Ireland in its day, until the Mini came along to revolutionise that particular market sector. The owner of this month’s cover beauty had a 600D as a first car, which replaced a Royal Enfield motorbike, and this led him to restore this 1964 Dublin car a few years ago. Moving further into the magazine we take a look at another car that was popular with families in the sixties, this time a plush Cortina 1600E, and also compare the merits of a classic 1980 BMW and a Cessna aeroplane of the same age!

Our tractor features this month both concern collections. The first set we look at is very special, as it contains a Nuffield 4/60 and a Robot potato planter that were bought by the present owners’ father back in the fifties and sixties. A David Brown also figures in the collection, as does a Ford 2000 with a Bamford dung spreader, all restored to beautiful condition. Our other feature relates one man’s love affair with Lanz tractors following his father’s purchase of a brand new 17hp Bulldog in 1954; we take a look at just three of his present collection, which are fascinating works in progress.

Motorcycle enthusiasts will be interested to read about what’s believed to be the oldest Triumph motorcycle in the country – a 1907 3.5hp – while our commercial feature this month looks at a very fine Rolls-Royce-powered ERF B-Series. With a long list of event reports, ranging from the Ballinakill Vintage & Classic Owners Club Indoor Show in Portlaoise to the Connacht Pre-War Run, plus all our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters, News & Events and lots, lots more, you won’t want to miss the January 2014 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

In the early sixties William Furlong’s first car was a Fiat 600, which was bought as a more practical alternative to his Royal Enfield motorcycle. Forty years later his fond memories of that car brought him to the ’64 Dublin car on these pages, which was in need of plenty of TLC to bring it back to life.

It’s always great to hear about vehicles or implements of any kind that have remained with their first, or very early, owners. Michael and James Ryan have a long-standing relationship with several of their old machines, including the Nuffield 4/60 that their father bought new in the sixties, as Andrew Pollock tells us this month.

Although the first Triumph-branded motorcycles were produced in 1902, it wasn’t to be until 1905 that the first Triumph-engined example rolled out of the works. Pat Dwyer’s highly-original 1907 3½hp is believed to be the oldest Triumph motorcycle in Ireland, and is part of an elite worldwide group of the marque’s earliest machines.

DSC_2165 The Eagle Has Landed

This month we travel to Co. Sligo to meet Brendan Armstrong and his 1979 B-Series ERF Eagle, and hear the story of how he acquired this workhorse and why he turned it into one half of his hobby. ERF once stood proud in a marketplace full of bigger manufacturers, and earned the respect of drivers and fleet managers up and down our country.

IMG_8092 Tender Loving Care

This month Tom Heavey visits the home of well-known Irish broadcaster Joe Duffy to see his very special model collection. Joe has a passion for the fire service, and over the years has put together an impressive and highly-varied line-up of fire engines and related vehicles of all kinds from all over the world.
