The Department of the Environment claims that motor tax evasion costs the state more than €50 million a year. This week it was announced that if a car is being taken off the road motorists will have to tell their motor tax office in advance.
Minister Phil Hogan says he is targeting those who evade paying motor tax and allows those with legitimate reasons to be facilitated.
But according to classic car enthusiasts, many of whom have several cars or others undergoing restoration, the new law could expose them to paying 20 or even 50 years back tax.
