The June 2014 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 97) is on sale now, and as usual is packed with a wide variety of interesting features. On the cover this month is a classic that was once such a popular model in Irish roads that it should be a common sight at vintage shows now, but instead is incredibly rare: an original Irish, unrestored Toyota Carina TA14. This low-mileage 1976 car has survived in amazing, unmolested condition, and has been safe in the stewardship of its current Toyota-mad owner since 1997. Our second feature car is from a completely different era, a gorgeous 1953 Riley RME that’s been travelling the roads of West Cork since 1996, while Neil Briscoe also takes us on a nervously excited test-drive in a Mercedes 300SL ‘Gullwing’, one of the most exciting classic cars of all.
Our main tractor feature this month takes a look at a fantastic collection of classic 5-Series Zetor tractors, which are photographed beautifully by our contributor Pat Mullan on Lissadell Beach in Co. Sligo; these have all been restored to a tee at home by a Zetor-mad family, who are currently taking on other projects in order to add to the collection. We also feature an absolutely stunning 1968 John Deere 1020, which has been restored very correctly indeed by an ex-John Deere technician and features all of its proper period equipment. You’d have to try very hard to pick fault with this one!
Motorcycle enthusiasts everywhere will no doubt read our feature on a 1977 Honda 50 with great nostalgia, as this was the starting point for many Irish riders; this particular bike has never strayed outside its home town of Templemore in Co. Tipperary, and still even retains is original dealer-supplied helmet. And, our commercial vehicle feature this month packs not one, but two rare Ford vans – a 307E Anglia and a Mk1 Escort 8cwt – which are both impeccably presented by their fastidious owner.
With full event reports from the Durrow Vintage Show, the Classic Car Sale, Show & Autojumble in Swords and the Ireland/Wales National Vintage Tractor Run, plus all of our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters, News & Events and lots, lots more, you won’t want to miss the June 2014 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!
Pristine Carina
Despite its many excellent qualities as a car, the classic rear-wheel-drive Toyota Carina TA14 is almost extinct today due to an unfortunate susceptibility to rust. However, Tommy Behan’s stunningly original 1976 example is still around to show us just how ahead of their time the model was in its day.
Five into Four Will Go
We’ve seen classic Zetor tractors in Irish Vintage Scene from time to time, but this month we upped the ante to showcase a marvellous 5-Series collection from Co. Leitrim, which has been restored by the Baker family to a beautiful standard throughout.
Magnificent Motoring
In the decades before their takeover by the Nuffield organisation, Riley were revered as a motorcar maker of distinction and quality. This stunning 1953 RME comes from the last Riley-designed series of models, and goes to show how right their ‘Magnificent Motoring’ slogan was.
Fifty/Fifty
Having featured Ireland’s favourite moped of the fifties and sixties, the NSU Quickly last month, we felt it was time we took a look at its spiritual successor in this country; the legendary Honda Super Cub 50.
Vantastic
While it’s hardly the most original of titles, when you’re presented with Vincent Maher’s absolutely stunning Escort and Anglia vans it’s a word that springs immediately to mind. It would be hard to find better.
