What's in Issue 96 May 2014

Screen Shot 2014-04-14 at 16.37.00The May 2014 edition of Irish Vintage Scene (Issue 96) is on sale now, and as usual is packed with a wide variety of interesting features. On the cover this month is a rare Irish example of one of the best classic sports saloons around; Hugh Doyle was offered this 1958 Riley One-Point-Five as a rough ex-competition car that had been lying in storage for over a decade, and has carried out a fantastic restoration. Moving further into the magazine we take a look at a lovely Irish-assembled 1953 VW Beetle, as well as a Ford Zodiac hearse, of all things, which has been in the same undertaking family since it was only three years old. Our tractor features this month focus on two quite different, but equally interesting, machines. Our main feature looks at a David Brown 885 from 1971, which isn’t the usual red and white, but a loud lime green/yellow as it worked all its life at Dublin Airport. Our other tractor feature tells the story of a stunning Massey Ferguson 35X that’s been in the ownership of the same Co. Limerick family since it was brand new. Motorcycle enthusiasts will no doubt feel some nostalgia when they read about our feature on a pair of NSU Quickly mopeds, which were highly popular in Ireland in their day but a rare sight at classic shows now, while our commercial feature this month looks at a beautifully-restored Volvo F88 290 truck, which again has a lovely family story behind it. With event reports including the Jumpstart VW Show in Co. Tipperary and a look back at last year’s Irish Vintage Scene Tractor-Build Challenge, plus all of our usual attractions like Laid to Rust, Your Letters, News & Events and lots, lots more, you won’t want to miss the May 2014 issue of Irish Vintage Scene; get yours today!

The Life of Riley

Riley-1500_0001

This month we look at a superb Riley One-Point-Five that has led a long and varied life, appearing on the small screen, acting as a parish runabout and taking part in the Monte Carlo historic rally. Having obtained it in poor condition about six years ago, owner Hugh Doyle has turned out an excellent restoration.

Up, Up & Away

up-up

You don’t really ever see a David Brown that’s not red, red and white or white and brown, so this lime green 885 really stands out from the crowd. In fact, the bright colour was picked with visibility in mind, as this tractor worked at Dublin Airport from new.

Oval Room

up-up

Despite numerous attempts by Volkswagen to reinvent the Beetle for the modern consumer, no successor has even come close to capturing the character of the original classic ‘Bug’. Looking at Kieran Moynihan’s oval-window 1953 VW it is not hard to see why attempts at regeneration by the German automotive giant have been unsuccessful.

Quick Learner

up-up

Eamonn Broughan isn’t your usual vintage vehicle fan, as he hasn’t been restoring old cars or tractors for years nor has he a big collection of machines sitting in the garage. However, what he does have is a lot of memories of his father’s old NSU Quickly and a love for the legendary German moped.

Super Swede

up-up

Swedish manufacturing giant Volvo produced many useful and practical trucks from the 1920s onwards, but the majority of those weren’t seen in this part of the world. It was to be the F88 of the mid sixties that really got the company noticed in Ireland, and today the model holds memories for many hauliers.
